End Citizens United is rapidly gaining steam as one of our favorite political action committees in Washington D.C. The End Citizens United PAC was designed to address campaign finance reform in the elections that take place at a federal level. The problem, if you couldn’t guess from their name, comes from the Supreme Court v Citizens United decision from a few years back. Citizens United is a conservative group that fought the Supreme Court in order to allow more campaign contributions and special interests into politics. The fundamental issue here is that money in politics has tainted the work of officials who are supposed to be serving the people.
Ever since the election of Donald Trump to the White House we have seen renewed interest in End Citizens United from people all around the country. End Citizens United leader Tiffany Muller has been absolutely stunned by the contribution activity from people who want to fight back against the swamp that President Trump is accumulating in Washington D.C. Through the first quarter of the 2017 fundraising season we saw End Citizens United raise a stunning $4 million. Of that $4 million the majority of donations were in and around the $12 range. This is a campaign for the people and by the people in an attempt to take back their agency at a federal level. Over 100,000 people have donated thus far and nearly 40% of them are first time donors.
Addressing campaign finance reform is a huge platform for progressives around the country and we think that is a huge reason that End Citizens United has found such prolonged success. However, it isn’t the only problem that the team at ECU is facing. There has been an almost nonstop flurry of action and information coming out regarding President Trump’s illegal collusion and ties to the Russian government. There seems to be, among the investigation, nearly a direct link between the Kremlin and the White House — a shocking and horrifying discovery for many on Capitol Hill. End Citizens United is also being supportive of truly digging deep and finding out the truth of these ties.
We have seen End Citizens United work together with a few other groups, including Common Cause, Daily Kos, and Every Voice in order to put together a huge petition that was sent to the Department of Justice. The petition gathered over 300,000 signatures and was focused on the call for a deep and impacting investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential Election. It is highly unlikely that President Trump nor his team at the Department of Justice take the petition seriously, but it is important that these groups are doing their patriotic duty to stand up for what they believe in.
